The **Aspen Art Museum is free**, in a **Shigeru Ban** building opened in 2014, with a rooftop sculpture garden. The **Wheeler Opera House** (1889, 503 seats) hosts music, comedy, film and talks all year. Down the road, **Anderson Ranch** in Snowmass Village has taught artists since 1966. In summer, the **Aspen Music Festival** fills the town.

## Aspen Art Museum

- **Admission**: Free, Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- **The building**: Shigeru Ban's first US museum, opened August 9, 2014: four levels, a woven-wood screen and walkable skylights. Ban won the Pritzker Prize the same year.
- **What you see**: A non-collecting museum: exhibitions commissioned with living artists, so there is always something new.
- **The rooftop**: A sculpture garden and café with views of Aspen Mountain; a good stop between lunch and après.

## Wheeler Opera House

- **History**: Built in 1889 by Jerome Wheeler with silver-boom money; the first Aspen building on the National Register of Historic Places (1972).
- **Today**: 503 seats for concerts, comedy, film, theater and conversation, plus some Aspen Music Festival events.

## Anderson Ranch Arts Center

Founded in 1966 by the ceramicist Paul Soldner, about 8 miles from Aspen. Workshops in ceramics, painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, furniture and digital fabrication; summer workshops, a January intensive, an artist residency, exhibitions, lectures and an annual art auction.
