Aspen's fall colors usually peak between **mid and late September**, earlier at high elevation and a few days later in the valley. In **2026**, a warm, dry summer brought color **early and less vivid**, with leaves dropping faster than usual. For a fall trip, plan on the **second half of September** and book **Maroon Bells** access as soon as your dates are set.

## When the colors peak

- **Typical peak**: Mid to late September around Aspen; forecasters put 2026 at September 16–30.
- **By elevation**: Higher groves turn first; the valley floor follows by several days to a week.
- **2026**: Drought-stressed trees turned early and dropped leaves faster; higher, north-facing slopes held color best.
- **After the peak**: Late September into early October: bare high groves, gold lower down, and the first snow on the peaks.

## Where to see them

## Seeing it well

- **Go early**: First light at Maroon Lake is the photograph everyone wants, and the quietest hour.
- **Weekdays**: Peak weekends are the busiest days of the autumn; a Tuesday is a different experience.
- **Layers**: Frosty mornings, warm afternoons, and the odd early snow above 10,000 feet.
