Starts behind the post office on Puppy Smith Road. - **Hunter Creek**: A gradual climb along the creek toward Hunter Valley, 8,900–10,400 ft. Easy to moderate. - **Smuggler**: A short 1½-mile workout on Smuggler Mountain Road to a lookout over town. - **Maroon Lake Scenic Trail**: 1.3 miles one way, 9,500–10,000 ft, at the Maroon Bells. Access by reservation in season; see [Maroon Bells reservations](https://aspenprive.com/maroon-bells-reservations/). - **Grottos and Weller Lake**: About 13.5 miles east on Highway 82: short trails to waterfalls, rock formations and an ice cave, and 0.6 miles to Weller Lake. ## Half-day hikes - **Crater Lake**: 1¾ miles one way from Maroon Lake; climbs steeply to the lake beneath the Bells. - **Grizzly Lake**: 3.6 miles one way with 2,000 ft of gain, off Independence Pass; switchbacks at the end. - **Anderson and Petroleum Lakes**: 1.8 miles one way to Petroleum Lake, 11,200–12,200 ft, on an old jeep road. ## Big days - **Ute Trail**: About 0.9 miles and 1,000 vertical feet to Ute Rock, from Ute Avenue; the local workout. - **Cathedral Lake**: 9,500 to 11,866 ft in Castle Creek Valley; climbs steadily, with afternoon lightning likely. - **American Lake**: 3.2 miles one way, 9,400–11,400 ft; switchbacks for the first 1.5 miles. - **Buckskin Pass**: 4.6 miles one way from Maroon Lake, half a mile above tree line. - **West Maroon Pass**: 6.2 miles one way, 10,000–12,500 ft; continues 12 miles to Crested Butte. ## Altitude, weather and permits - **Start low**: Give yourself two days before the high lakes.
