# Aspen vs Breckenridge > Aspen or Breckenridge? Four mountains on Ikon vs five peaks on Epic, a quiet luxury town vs a lively Summit County one, and how each is reached from Denver. Canonical page: https://aspenprive.com/aspen-vs-breckenridge/ Updated: 2026-10-02 · Publisher: Aspen Privé (local Aspen stay planning and concierge) **Aspen** is **four mountains on one ticket** (about **5,480 acres**) on the **Ikon Pass**, with its own airport minutes from town. **Breckenridge** is **five peaks** and **2,908 acres** on the **Epic Pass**, with a 12,998 ft summit and a historic main street, closer to Denver on I-70. Mountain statistics are each resort's published figures; pass and travel details from the resorts, Ikon, Epic and the airports. Checked October 2, 2026. ## The numbers - **Terrain**: Aspen: four mountains on one ticket, about 5,480 acres combined (Snowmass alone 3,362). Breckenridge: 2,908 acres across five peaks, 187 trails. - **Summit**: Aspen: Snowmass 12,510 ft, Highland Bowl 12,392 ft. Breckenridge: 12,998 ft (Peak 8); base 9,600 ft. - **Vertical**: Aspen: Snowmass 4,406 ft; Highlands 4,342 ft with the Bowl. Breckenridge: 3,398 ft. - **Lifts**: Breckenridge: 35 lifts, including the Imperial SuperChair, which the resort calls the highest lift in North America. - **Pass (2026–27)**: Aspen Snowmass: Ikon (7 days combined on the full Ikon Pass). Breckenridge: Epic (Vail Resorts). - **Airport**: Aspen: its own airport (ASE), about 3 miles from town. Breckenridge: no airport of its own; most visitors drive from Denver International via I-70 and Highway 9. ## How you arrive - **The journey**: Breckenridge is roughly two hours from Denver International in good conditions via I-70 and Highway 9; Aspen is about four hours in winter via Glenwood Canyon, or a short connecting flight into ASE. - **Aspen's airport**: ASE is a few minutes from town, with commercial and private flights. It closes April 4 to November 19, 2027 for runway work, so late-season spring trips should check dates. [Airport closure](https://aspenprive.com/aspen-airport-closure-2027/). ## The town and the evenings - **Aspen**: A Victorian mining town with a real year-round life: restaurants led by a Michelin star, galleries, the Aspen Art Museum and a late après scene. [Aspen restaurants](https://aspenprive.com/aspen-restaurants/). - **Breckenridge**: A Victorian mining town too, with a long, lively Main Street, a younger crowd and a strong value-for-money lodging base. Busier on weekends because it is within easy reach of Denver. - **Non-skiers**: Aspen gives non-skiers more to do: spas, shopping, snowshoeing and sleigh dinners. [Aspen for non-skiers](https://aspenprive.com/aspen-for-non-skiers/). ## What it costs - **Passes**: If you already hold Ikon or Epic, the pass often decides the trip. Window tickets at both are expensive; check each resort's current prices for your dates. - **Lodging**: Aspen is consistently one of the most expensive ski towns in North America, especially over the holidays. We don't publish average prices we can't verify. [What an Aspen trip costs](https://aspenprive.com/aspen-trip-cost/). ## Who each suits - **Choose Aspen if**: the group mixes beginners, experts and non-skiers, you want to fly straight in, or the evenings (dining, galleries, a quieter luxury feel) matter as much as the skiing. - **Choose Breckenridge if**: you hold an Epic Pass, you'd rather drive from Denver than connect to a mountain airport, or you want very high, above-treeline terrain and a busy, sociable town at a lower price point. - **Altitude**: Breckenridge's base (9,600 ft) is higher than Aspen's town (about 7,900 ft). Either way, the first 48 hours matter. [Altitude: the first 48 hours](https://aspenprive.com/aspen-altitude-first-48-hours/). ## If you choose Aspen (what Aspen Privé arranges) We're the local team: the airport pickup, skis fitted at the house, the house stocked before you land and a driver for the evenings. You keep the relationship. We handle Aspen. ## Questions **Is Aspen or Breckenridge better?** They suit different trips.
