**Snowmass** is a separate village at the base of the **largest of the four mountains** (3,362 acres), where about **95% of lodging is ski-in, ski-out**: the choice for families and mixed-ability groups. **Aspen** is the historic town, with **Aspen Mountain rising straight out of downtown** and restaurants and nightlife on foot. They are **about 20 minutes apart**, linked by **free RFTA buses**, and one ticket covers all four mountains.

## How they compare

- **The mountain**: Snowmass: 3,362 acres, 4,406 ft vertical, terrain for every level. Aspen Mountain: 673 acres from downtown, no beginner runs.
- **Mornings**: Snowmass: most lodging is ski-in, ski-out. Aspen: walk to the Silver Queen Gondola, or a free bus to the other mountains.
- **Evenings**: Aspen: restaurants, bars and shops on foot. Snowmass: quieter, with dinner in the village or a bus or car to Aspen.
- **Children**: Snowmass: ski school from age 2½, childcare at the base, lodging on the snow. Aspen Mountain takes ski school only from age 5.
- **Getting between**: About 20 minutes; free RFTA buses between Aspen and Snowmass all day.
- **Parking**: Snowmass Base Village garage $9 an hour to $63 a day, no overnight. Aspen's Rio Grande garage $15 a day.

## The ski-first week

- **Families with young children**: Ski school, rentals and childcare at the base, and lodging on the snow: nobody carries skis through town.
- **Mixed abilities**: Beginners, confident skiers and experts can all ski the same mountain and meet for lunch.
- **Space**: Snowmass is larger than the other three mountains combined, so a week never runs out of terrain.

## The town week

- **Strong skiers**: Aspen Mountain from town, and Aspen Highlands and Highland Bowl a short free bus away.

## In summer
