# Aspen winter forecast 2026–27 > Will Aspen have a good snow year? NOAA's official 2026–27 winter outlook for Aspen, the strong El Niño, normal snowfall, and how to plan around it. Canonical page: https://aspenprive.com/aspen-winter-forecast/ Updated: 2026-10-02 · Publisher: Aspen Privé (local Aspen stay planning and concierge) NOAA's official outlook, issued September 17, 2026, gives Aspen **equal chances** of a wetter or drier, warmer or colder than normal **December to February**. Much of Colorado to the south and east is tilted toward above-normal precipitation, and for **January to March** Aspen itself falls in the area leaning **above normal** (33–40%). A **very strong El Niño** is under way. None of this is a snow promise. Seasonal outlooks give odds, not forecasts of storms. Here is exactly what the NOAA Climate Prediction Center published, read for Aspen's location, and what it means for a trip. Checked October 2, 2026. The next official update is October 15, 2026. ## What NOAA says for Aspen - **December–February: snow and rain**: Equal chances. Aspen sits just outside the area tilted toward above-normal precipitation, which covers much of Colorado including Crested Butte, Telluride and Denver. - **December–February: temperature**: Equal chances of above, near or below normal for all of Colorado. - **January–March: snow and rain**: Aspen moves into the area leaning above normal: a 33–40% chance of the wettest third, against 33% in an ordinary year. - **ENSO status**: El Niño Advisory. NOAA gives a greater than 90% chance of a very strong El Niño through the 2026–27 fall and winter. ## Will Aspen have a good snow year? - **Nobody can know yet**: Seasonal outlooks shift the odds by a few percentage points. Individual storms, which decide a ski week, are only forecastable about a week or two ahead. - **El Niño favors the south**: In strong El Niño winters the storm track usually favors the southern United States. Aspen sits in the middle of Colorado, near the edge of that pattern, which is why NOAA leaves it at equal chances for midwinter. - **What normal looks like**: By NOAA's 1991–2020 normals, the Aspen 1 SW station averages 170.8 inches of snow a year, with about 27–28 inches each in January, February and March. The ski mountains, higher up, receive more. [Aspen weather by month](https://aspenprive.com/aspen-weather-by-month/) - **Snowmaking helps early**: All four mountains make snow on key runs, which is what carries the early season when natural snow is late. Late March into April is when the snowpack is usually deepest. Tell us your dates and we'll arrange the arrival, skis fitted at the house, and days out that work in any conditions. [Ask us](https://aspenprive.com/contact.html?service=winter-forecast). ## What this means for planning - **Prefer refundable**: For December and early January, refundable or changeable rates and flights cost little extra and protect you if the early season is slow. - **Holiday weeks don't wait**: Christmas, New Year's and Presidents' week fill regardless of the forecast. Book these on the calendar, not the outlook. [Christmas in Aspen](https://aspenprive.com/christmas-in-aspen/) - **Pick the mountain for the conditions**: In a thin early season, groomed snowmade terrain matters more than bowls; in a big year Highland Bowl opens. [The four mountains](https://aspenprive.com/aspen-four-mountains-which-one/) - **Storms affect travel**: Big storm days can delay flights into Aspen and close passes on the drive. Build slack into arrival day. NOAA has an El Niño Advisory in place and gives a greater than 90% chance of a very strong event through the winter. **Does El Niño mean more snow in Aspen?** Not reliably. Strong El Niño tends to favor the southern U.S.; central Colorado sits near the edge, which is why NOAA shows equal chances for Aspen in midwinter. **How much snow does Aspen normally get?** About 170.8 inches a year at the Aspen 1 SW station, by NOAA's 1991–2020 normals; the ski mountains receive more. **When will the forecast be updated?** NOAA updates its seasonal outlook monthly; the next is October 15, 2026. We update this page when it changes. ## What Aspen Privé can arrange for this Skis fitted at the house, a car timed around the storms, and days that work in any conditions. - [Ski rental delivered](https://aspenprive.com/ski-rental-delivery-aspen/): Fitted at the residence, not in a shop queue. - [Private airport transfer](https://aspenprive.com/aspen-airport-transportation/) (From $195 per vehicle): From Aspen's airport to the door in a private SUV, timed to your actual landing. - [Private ski instructor](https://aspenprive.com/private-ski-instructor-aspen/): A private lesson matched to the skier and the mountain. - [A day out, planned](https://aspenprive.com/contact.html?service=day-out): Reservations, timing, a driver and a picnic for Maroon Bells or a day in the valley, arranged around your group. ## Sources (checked October 2, 2026) - [NOAA CPC: seasonal outlook discussion (issued Sept 17, 2026)](https://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/predictions/long_range/fxus05.html) - [NOAA CPC: seasonal outlook GIS data, DJF and JFM 2026–27](https://ftp.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/GIS/us_tempprcpfcst/) - [NOAA CPC: ENSO diagnostic discussion (Sept 10, 2026)](https://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/analysis_monitoring/enso_advisory/ensodisc.shtml) - [NOAA NCEI: U.S. Climate Normals 1991–2020, Aspen 1 SW](https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/services/data/v1?dataset=normals-monthly-1991-2020&stations=USC00050372&format=json&dataTypes=MLY-SNOW-NORMAL) ## Related - [Weather by month](https://aspenprive.com/aspen-weather-by-month/): Normal temperatures and snowfall. - [Spring skiing](https://aspenprive.com/spring-skiing-aspen/): When the snow is deepest. - [What to pack](https://aspenprive.com/what-to-pack-for-aspen/): For any winter.
