In summer, the quickest way from Denver to Aspen is over Independence Pass. In winter that road is closed, so every drive from Denver goes the long way: west on I-70 over the Divide and through Glenwood Canyon, then back up the Roaring Fork Valley on Highway 82. Plan for four hours in good conditions, and more on a snowy Friday.
Flying into Denver is often cheaper and more reliable than flying into Aspen. Whether it's the right choice depends on the day, the weather and who is driving. This is how we think about it.

From September 1 to May 31, Colorado's traction law applies on I-70 between Morrison and Dotsero. Tyres need at least 3/16-inch tread, and four-wheel or all-wheel drive is no longer enough on its own: the tyres must be winter, all-weather or mud-and-snow rated, or the car must carry chains or an approved traction device. Many rental cars don't meet it.
CDOT closes I-70 through the canyon for safety when there is a risk of rockfall or debris. If a closure is expected to last more than an hour, the recommended detour runs north on CO 9, US 40 and CO 13, adding about two and a half hours. CDOT asks drivers not to use Cottonwood Pass or other county and forest roads as shortcuts.
Westbound traffic builds on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings; eastbound on Sunday afternoons. Leaving Denver before noon on a weekday is usually the easiest drive of the week.
Denver has the most flights, the most direct routes and usually the lowest fares. Flights into Aspen are shorter to the door but more exposed to weather, and in a storm they can be cancelled or land in Grand Junction or Eagle instead.
For families with luggage and ski gear, a Denver arrival works best with a driver who does the mountain corridor every week, rather than a rental car after a long flight. For a Friday arrival in heavy snow, flying into Eagle or Aspen and accepting some risk of delay is often less tiring than four to six hours on I-70.
Arriving at altitude matters too: Aspen sits near 8,000 feet, and a long drive at the end of a travel day makes the first evening harder. Your first evening in Aspen.
Check COtrip.org or call 511 for closures and chain-law status. If Vail Pass or the canyon is closing, it is usually better to stay in Denver and drive first thing than to spend the evening in traffic.
