Empty legs to and from Aspen

When an aircraft has to fly to or from Aspen without passengers, the seat can be yours. Here is how it really works, and how to have us watch your route.

An empty leg is a flight that will happen anyway. Around Aspen there are a lot of them, and almost all of them are about timing.

We do not post a board of flights and prices. Listings that cannot be verified in real time do more harm than good. Instead, tell us where and when you want to fly, and we will tell you when a suitable empty leg on that route appears. And whoever ends up flying you, we handle everything on the ground in Aspen.

Aspen Privé is not a direct air carrier and does not operate aircraft. Every flight we arrange is operated by an FAA-certificated direct air carrier, normally under 14 CFR Part 135 (or Part 121), which holds operational control of the flight. We act as your agent in arranging it. The operating carrier is named in writing before you book.

IHow It Works

What an empty leg is, and is not

What it is
A one-way repositioning flight An aircraft drops a client in Aspen and has to fly home, or flies to Aspen to collect one. That leg can carry you instead of nobody.
Why it costs less
The aircraft is flying anyway Operators often price these well below a full one-way charter. How much below depends on the operator and the timing; we will not quote a typical discount we cannot stand behind.
The trade-off
It runs on someone else's schedule If the original trip moves, your departure can move or be cancelled, sometimes late. Keep a backup plan, or a day of slack.
Aircraft
Whatever is repositioning You choose from what is moving, not from the whole fleet. At ASE the 95-foot wingspan limit already rules out the largest jets.
IIThe Aspen Pattern

When empty legs appear around Aspen

Winter carries most of Aspen's private traffic, and it concentrates around Christmas and New Year, Martin Luther King weekend and Presidents' Day. Clients often fly into Aspen one way before a peak and leave one way after it.

Before a peak, aircraft that delivered clients to Aspen often need to leave empty, so legs out of Aspen appear, toward the big origin markets: Texas, Southern California, the New York area and South Florida.

After a peak, aircraft fly in empty to collect departing clients, so legs into Aspen appear. That is the useful window for someone flying to Aspen just after the holidays.

None of this is guaranteed on a given day. It is a pattern, and the best way to use it is to have your route watched.

IIIAirports

ASE, Eagle and Rifle

ASE
Aspen/Pitkin County

Three miles from town. 95-foot wingspan limit, operating hours 0700–2300, no departures after 2230. Closed April 4 – November 19, 2027.

EGE
Eagle County

About an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half from Aspen. Takes larger aircraft than ASE, so it widens the choice of legs.

RIL
Rifle Garfield County

About an hour and a quarter from Aspen, no airline traffic, and the usual private alternate when ASE weather or the 2027 closure rules it out.

2027
The closure year

While ASE is closed for runway reconstruction, empty legs to the Aspen area land at Eagle or Rifle. We watch those instead and arrange the drive. Closure details.

VBoth Directions

Whoever brings you, we handle Aspen

If you already fly with a card, a membership or a broker, keep them. Empty legs are only part of why people call us. Aspen Privé is a local team on the ground in Aspen: the arrival, the drivers, the residence ready before you land, ski gear and instructors, dinner reservations and private chefs, childcare, evenings out and the requests that fit nowhere else.

And if you operate or broker aircraft into Aspen, we would like to hear about your repositioning legs, and to look after your passengers once they land. For partners.

Arrival

Vehicles at the aircraft, and moved to Eagle or Rifle if the flight is.

The residence

Prepared, provisioned and warm before anyone lands.

Common questions

What is an empty leg?

An empty leg is a flight an aircraft has to make without passengers, usually to reposition after dropping a client off or to collect one. Operators sometimes offer that flight to another traveler, typically at a lower price than a full charter, because the aircraft is flying the route anyway.

Why are there empty legs around Aspen?

Aspen traffic is strongly seasonal and peaks around Christmas, New Year and the winter holiday weekends. Many clients fly into Aspen one way before a peak and out one way after it, so aircraft often reposition out of Aspen empty before the holidays and into Aspen empty afterwards.

What is the catch?

Flexibility. An empty leg follows the original client’s schedule: the departure time, date and even the airport can change or the flight can be cancelled if the original trip changes. Luggage and passenger limits are set by the aircraft. It suits travelers who can move by a day or have a backup plan.

Do you list empty legs or prices on this page?

No. We do not show listings because we only want to put verified, current availability in front of you. Tell us the route, date window and passengers, and we will tell you when something suitable appears, with the operator named.

Is Aspen Privé an airline or charter operator?

No. Aspen Privé is not a direct air carrier and does not operate aircraft. Flights are operated by FAA-certificated direct air carriers, normally under Part 135, which hold operational control of the flight. We act as your agent in arranging the flight.

What happens when Aspen airport closes in 2027?

Aspen/Pitkin County Airport closes from April 4 to November 19, 2027. During that period, flights to the Aspen area use Eagle County (EGE) or Rifle (RIL), and we watch empty legs into those airports instead, then arrange the drive to Aspen.
