Aspen is one of the most weather-sensitive airports in the country. What actually happens when a flight can't land, and how to plan so it doesn't take the first day of the trip.
Aspen/Pitkin County Airport has a single runway in a narrow mountain valley, surrounded by peaks above 14,000 feet. When winter weather closes in, flights are delayed, cancelled or diverted to an airport with more room, most often Grand Junction or Eagle, and the last part of the journey happens by road.
Most winter trips arrive on time. But if yours is the one that doesn't, the difference between a lost evening and a minor inconvenience is almost entirely in how it was planned.

ASE sits at about 7,800 feet with mountains close on every side. Approaches need more visibility and better conditions than most airports, so low cloud or snow that another airport would fly through can stop arrivals here.
The current runway limits aircraft to a 95-foot wingspan. Airlines fly smaller regional jets into Aspen, with fewer seats to rebook onto when flights cancel.
Winter storms and wind often build through the day. Morning flights are generally more reliable than the last flights of the evening.
A longer runway at a lower elevation. Many airlines fly here in winter, and it is the most common alternative for a trip that can't get into Aspen.
Where many diverted Aspen flights land in storms. Airlines have in the past arranged buses from Grand Junction to Aspen when the road is open.
No airline service, but a common alternative for private aircraft, open around the clock and west of Glenwood Canyon.
The last resort by road in winter, because Independence Pass is closed. Denver to Aspen in winter.
Fly in the morning when you can. Leave a buffer between landing and anything important: book the celebration dinner for night two, not night one. Have a driver who tracks the flight rather than a fixed pickup time, so the car goes wherever the plane does.
And have the house ready regardless of when you arrive: groceries in, heating on, rentals fitted. If the plane lands in Grand Junction at nine at night, walking into a warm, stocked residence at half past eleven is what saves the trip. Grocery stocking · Your first evening.

Most often Grand Junction (about 2 hours 15 minutes by road) or Eagle County (about 90 minutes). Private aircraft commonly use Rifle (about 1 hour 15 minutes).
Eagle has a longer runway at a lower elevation and is generally less affected by weather, at the cost of a 90-minute drive. Aspen is minutes from town when flights operate.
Fly in the morning, keep the first evening flexible, use a driver who tracks the flight, and have the residence ready before you land so a late arrival is still comfortable.
