Aspen vs Telluride

Both are world-class. Here is an honest comparison, and who each one suits.

Aspen is four mountains on one ticket (about 5,480 acres) on the Ikon Pass. Telluride is one mountain of 2,000+ acres with a 13,150 ft summit and 4,425 ft of vertical, linked to Epic (7 days on the full Epic Pass). Both are remote, both have a small airport close by; Aspen's has far more flights.

Mountain statistics are each resort's published figures; pass and travel details from the resorts, Ikon, Epic and the airports. Checked October 2, 2026.

How you arrive

The journey

Both are long drives from Denver. Telluride's own airport (TEX) is 6 miles away; Montrose (MTJ) is 65 miles. Aspen's airport (ASE) is about 3 miles from town.

Aspen's airport

ASE is a few minutes from town, with commercial and private flights. It closes April 4 to November 19, 2027 for runway work, so late-season spring trips should check dates. Airport closure.

The town and the evenings

Aspen

A Victorian mining town with a real year-round life: restaurants led by a Michelin star, galleries, the Aspen Art Museum and a late après scene. Aspen restaurants.

Telluride

A small National Historic Landmark town at the end of a box canyon, plus Mountain Village above it, linked by a free gondola. Quieter and more remote than Aspen, with fewer restaurants and less nightlife.

Non-skiers

Aspen gives non-skiers more to do: spas, shopping, snowshoeing and sleigh dinners. Aspen for non-skiers.

IVCost

What it costs

Passes

If you already hold Ikon or Epic, the pass often decides the trip. Window tickets at both are expensive; check each resort's current prices for your dates.

Lodging

Aspen is consistently one of the most expensive ski towns in North America, especially over the holidays. We don't publish average prices we can't verify. What an Aspen trip costs.

VOur view

Who each suits

Choose Aspen if

you want more mountains and terrain variety, more flight options, or a bigger dining, shopping and evening scene.

Choose Telluride if

you want a smaller, quieter, more remote town in a spectacular box canyon, steep expert terrain without the crowds, or you hold an Epic Pass.

Honestly

Telluride is one of the most beautiful settings in American skiing. If seclusion is the point, it is hard to beat. If the trip needs restaurants, variety and easy logistics for a group, Aspen is the stronger choice.
