Which airport to fly into for Aspen

Aspen's own airport is three miles from town. The four alternatives trade drive time for reliability, seats or a longer runway. How to choose, by season and by aircraft.

The closest airport to Aspen is Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE), three miles from downtown. When it works, nothing else comes close. The question is what to do when it doesn't: winter weather, full flights, an aircraft too large for its runway, or the 2027 closure from April 4 to November 19.

Here are the five airports people actually use for an Aspen trip, with the drive to town and the reason to pick each one. Drive times are typical winter times by road; the storm that diverts your flight can lengthen them.

IThe Five Airports

Distance, drive and who uses it

ASE
Aspen/Pitkin County · 3 miles

Airline service operated for American, United and Delta, and private aircraft through the airport's FBO. Minutes from town, but a single runway at about 7,800 feet in a narrow valley, a 95-foot wingspan limit and the most weather-sensitive approach in the region. Aspen airport guide.

EGE
Eagle County · about 90 minutes

About 70 miles away, with a 9,000-foot runway at a lower elevation and more airline routes in winter. The usual choice when Aspen seats are gone or the forecast is bad. Drive passes through Glenwood Canyon.

RIL
Rifle · about 1 hr 15

About 60 miles, a 7,000-foot runway, no airline service, open around the clock. A frequent pick for private aircraft, and west of Glenwood Canyon.

GJT
Grand Junction · about 2 hr 15

About 125 miles. Where many diverted Aspen flights land in storms, and a practical summer alternative in 2027.

DEN
Denver · about 4 hours in winter

About 220 miles; the most flights and the longest drive. In winter Independence Pass is closed, so the route is I-70 through Glenwood Springs. Denver to Aspen in winter.
