Aspen is four mountains on one ticket (about 5,480 acres combined) around a real, historic town, on the Ikon Pass. Vail is one very large mountain (5,289 acres) with its famous Back Bowls, a purpose-built alpine village, on the Epic Pass. Vail is closer to Denver (about 100 miles on I-70); Aspen has its own airport a few minutes from town, closed April 4 to November 19, 2027.

Buttermilk for beginners and children, Snowmass for everyone, Aspen Mountain straight from town, Highlands and Highland Bowl for experts. A mixed group splits up and meets for dinner.
The front side for groomers, the Back Bowls for wide-open powder. Everyone skis from the same base, which makes it simple for a group of similar ability.

Many visitors split a week. Land at Eagle, ski Vail, then transfer to Aspen mid-morning with a private SUV (from $950 per vehicle, all-inclusive) and arrive to a house that's ready. Vail to Aspen.
the group has mixed abilities or non-skiers, the evenings matter as much as the skiing, or you'd rather fly straight in.
you hold an Epic Pass, you want the shortest drive from Denver, or everyone skis at the same level and wants the Back Bowls.
Aspen's airport is closed April 4 to November 19, 2027, so summer and autumn visits start at Eagle or Denver either way. Airport closure.

Aspen Snowmass is on the Ikon Pass: the full Ikon includes 7 days combined across the four mountains. Vail is on the Epic Pass.
Vail is the larger single mountain at 5,289 acres. Aspen Snowmass's four mountains total about 5,480 acres, with Snowmass alone at 3,362.
In winter the drive goes west on I-70 through Glenwood Canyon and up Highway 82; from late May to autumn, Independence Pass opens a second route. Published taxi fares are $500–550; a private SUV is from $950 per vehicle.
