Aspen in November 2026

Two Novembers in one: a quiet shoulder month, then opening day on Thanksgiving and the first arrivals of the winter.

November in Aspen is a month of two halves. Until Thanksgiving the town is in its shoulder season: lifts closed, early snow arriving, and the quietest weeks of the year. Then on Thursday, November 26, 2026, Aspen Mountain and Snowmass open for the 2026–27 season, and Thanksgiving week becomes the first busy week of the winter.

Season dates are from Aspen Snowmass; weather is NOAA's 1991–2020 climate normals for the Aspen 1 SW station. Checked October 2, 2026. Normals are averages: early-season snow varies a great deal from year to year.

IIWhat's open

Before and after opening day

Until November 25
Shoulder season: no lift-served skiing. Some restaurants and shops take their break or keep shorter hours before the season. It's a good month for a quiet stay, spas and dinners without a wait, not for a ski trip.Aspen in the off-season

How busy, and when

Early November: the quietest weeks

Few visitors and easy tables. The trade-off is that the mountains are closed and some places are too.

Thanksgiving week: the first rush

Opening day and the holiday land together. Atlantic Aviation has flagged extra ramp congestion at Aspen from November 25 to 29, and the Wednesday is the heaviest travel day.

Early-season terrain

On opening weekend expect a limited number of open runs, much of it on snowmaking. Treat skiing as part of the trip, not the whole point, and keep the plan flexible.

IVBook early

What to book now for late November

Thanksgiving dinner

Hotel Thanksgiving dinners were already taking reservations in late September. Or have a private chef cook at the house. Private chef

The arrival car

Wednesday and Thursday arrivals cluster. Book the car with the flights, and have a plan if an Aspen flight diverts to Eagle. When flights divert

Rentals and a first lesson

Opening week is quieter than Christmas for lessons, but children's first day of the season goes better with skis fitted at the house. Ski rental delivery

VPacking

What to pack for November

Layers rather than one heavy coat: days in the 40s, nights below 20°F. Waterproof boots for slush in town, a warm hat and gloves, sunglasses and sunscreen (the sun is strong at nearly 8,000 feet), and full ski gear if you're coming for opening week. The full packing list.
